Rules of Life

Over almost 85 years, I’ve formulated the following Rules that I recommend others think about:

Rule #1: Nobody knows what they are talking about.

Rule #2: Almost all Hollywood stuff is trash.

Rule #3: If you don’t believe Rule #2, you are guilty of Rule #1.

If it is not right…I won’t do it
If it is not true… I won’t say it
If itis not mine… I won’t take it

One day when I was on the faculty at California Lutheran University I got a memo from the dean soliciting ideas for incorporating more emphasis on ethics in marketing courses. It was a good idea and I implemented a very simple thing. I had business cards made up that carried the above words

From that point on I handed out the cards to each of my students, and later to my children, grandchildren and others. I’ve run into former students that still carry the card in their wallets.

Makes me feel good.
